Good looking website but...

You can see lots of great looking websites by net surfing. We web designers, are making an effort to make websites look good. On a previous article (What is a website?), I explained how a website is made. A website is made by using HTML, XHTML and CSS.

Websites can also have pictures that function as a nice decoration.

I would like to show you one website screenshot and how it looks in normal condition. This is a screenshot of the website of our parent company Eikoh IT Solutions (you can click on the image to enlarge it).

But if I take the screenshot of this website without showing any pictures, it will look like this:

Now you can see the same website without any pictures. But even with the pictures disabled, you can read all the important information on the website.

Some websites are using pictures for important elements. But not only humans are reading websites. Some search engine robots are also reading websites, but at the moment, search engines do not have so high technology that can read information of the pictures.

We can use pictures on the websites but it's important for web designers and developers to display important information as text, so that search engines like Google can read the websites well.

If you have a website and you want search engines like Google to be able to find it and read it nicely, it's important not to use pictures for important elements and write them with text.

If you are using Firefox as a web browser, try to see your website by disabling pictures. Here's how you can configure it:

1. Please open Firefox
2. On the top menu, click on "Tools" and then select "Options"
3. The Options window will open. Click on "Content"
4. Remove the check mark on "Load images automatically"

This will disable the images from the websites. If you can still read all the important information, it means your website is good for the search engines. Do not forget to put the check mark again on "Load images automatically" to return your Firefox configuration to normal.
